14 Section A Gannett Westchester Newspapers Sunday April 5 1981 Obituaries Teachers learn how BULLET 'ence to put life By GEO WALDEN Staff Writer David Glatzer who gave the keynote speech at the sixth annual Ten County Mathematics Conference Saturday at the Anne Dorner Middle School in Ossin ing said afterward that one of his favor ite expressions is day without math is a day without By the laws of logic if a given statement is true the converse is also true And indeed though Saturday broke with grayness and showers by the time nearly 300 teachers who came to Ossining from as far as Delaware County were regarding exhibits and lectures ranging from microcomputers to Geometric the clouds had lightened inside and outside Conference Chairman Charles Hines teacher and math coordinator at the middle school reported at midday that the event a presentation of the Mid Hudson School Study Council was beautifully" and credited Glatzer with being a dynamic guest speaker Glatzer's sunshine line suggests that math is a vital part of life and that was the theme of his address entitled Basics for Real People" The speech covered methods of teaching math that emphasize the ways numbers are used in everyday life This approach which the West Orange NJ math teacher said can be used from kindergarten through high school capitalizes on situations and materials that students confront outside the classroom or instance he said summarizing his remarks after the speech the day after the postage rates went from 15 to 18 cents would have been a perfect time for a teacher to get across the meaning of a 20 percent increase Glatzer president of the Association of Math Teachers of New Jersey said that there have been a lot of cries for arithmetic teachers to back to ba sics' that is to drill the fundamentals into students But he believes basic skills don't have to be taught with a reactio nary style that instead the fundamentals can be learned in a practical context Math he said can be connected to items beyond the classroom ranging from junk mail to want ads The discount coupons in junk mail can help students in math learn how to deduct percentages he said Referring to want ads he said I show kids an ad offering a used car for $3995 and I ask them much does that car they all say $4000 What done is shown their understanding of rounding There are innumerable places to ap ply math to non school matters he said including time tables (figuring out the duration and frequency of trips) TV Guide (time slots and what they rep resent and what the Neilson ratings reflect statistically) Billboard Magazine (interpreting record sales figures) Of all non classroom math materials none are as effective as daily newspa pers Glatzer said Take the sports pages he proposed are the winning per centages of teams always carried out to three decimals? Why 500 instead of 50? There's a reason" Three places he ex plained show which of two teams has a better record when they are tied" or example say the Yankees had a record of 79 59 and the Red Sox were 80 60 Carrying out the winning percent ages to two places would show both teams at 57 But go out to the thou sandths place and the Yankees are at572 to Boston's 571 On the other hand four places are unnecessary a lesson in the varying precision of numerical expressions What all this calls for said Glatzer is lesson planning really looking at things that can't be gotten from textbooks but which do motivate learning" The intent of this kind of math instruction he added to increase awareness that people really use this Before Glatzer spoke Ossining Super intendent of Schools John Humphrey and AMD Principal Charles Pittignano greeted conferees On display in the AMD corridors were Apple and Radio Shack computers and hundreds of math books with titles ranging from Analog Converter: Software and Hardware In to "Let's Learn to Commenting on the smoothness with which the day was running Conference Program Director Dr Michael Nuspl of the Pearl River schools said you get mathematicians together they think in a logical way and everything goes Bedford viewed for development The Platinum Mile is turning north A New York City devel opment firm wants to con struct research or corporate offices on the rolling hills and residential lands along Route 172 near the Route 684 intersection in Bedford The firm DWS New York Holdings Inc is ex pected to petition the Bed ford Town Board for a zoning change that would allow construction on 114 acres adjacent to the ox Lane High School campus The plan is part of a growing trend of corporate development moving north from Westchester's Plati num Mile along Route 287 The proposal expected to be delivered formally at the April 7 meeting of the Town Board is sure to bring an outpouring of emotional response from residents sensitive to de velopment in the area The parcel of land com monly referred to as the Dreyfus property is lo cated in what some town officials describe as the heartland of four acre res idential zoning Continued from page one The firm away Damage to the building which was reportedly slated to be converted to cooperatives was estimated at nearly $1 million While officials said the cause has not yet been determined due to the extensive damage ire Lt Donald Starkey stressed that arson has been ruled out Officials believe the fire had probably been smoul dering from one to two hours before the first alarm went out shortly before 11 pm Saturday "It started in a sealed place that really could not have been reached by Starkey said indicator shows there was a very slow build up because the roof beams were so heavily charred One guy told us when his apartment started filling with smoke he went up on the roof and found it was soft spongy and very hot But he see any Starkey speculated that the co*ckloft burned unno ticed for so long because by nature heat and smoke rises rather than descends could smell any thing until the thing went More than 120 of 420 men firefighter force along with 21 rigs from stations throughout the city were on the scene by the time the fire reached a general alarm at 1:14 a Armed with oxygen masks axes water hoses and other tools firefighters stationed in most of the sixth floor apartments slashed away at the ceiling to get access to the fire But Starkey said it was difficult to cut the ceiling because an extremely strong wire screen was built into it Other firemen dug trenches for makeshift retaining walls to stop the traveling flames The sixth floor suffered heavy fire smoke and water damage But the lower floors suffered only smoke and water damage since the fire did not burn down Meanwhile the Salvation Army gave out hot bever ages and food to tenants and firemen while the Red Cross attended to the homeless families A Con Edison crew stood by Units from such I think what the voters intended when they rejected the takeover less than 18 months ago all agree rates are too high but this last increase has taught us to go after the Public Service Commission rather than roll out a referendum already been rejected Brady said that as majority leader he will not support another referendum as Tocci and Brodsky have proposed but has joined statewide efforts to require members of the Public Service Commission which sets Con Ed rates to be elected rather than appointed have to force the PSC to move" said Brady One is behind us time to move WHELAN Mary Of Carmel NY on April 4 1981 age 69 years Wife of Vaughan Whe Ian Daughter Mrs Carma oi Altimari Morse Mother of Mi chael Whelan Mrs Mary Grace Mrs Kathryn Ustica Sister of Thomas Elizabeth Morse Mrs Eleanor Mc Cauley Grandmother of four uneral services Tuesday 12 Noon at the Church of the Holy Communion Rrt 6 Mahopac NY There will be no calling hours In her memory contribu1 tion to the American Society Putnam County UniE Carmel NY would be appreci 1' ated for further information contact the CARGAIN BARBER UNERAL HOME 10 owler Ave Carmel NY at 914 225 3672 YANDOLI Loretta of Yonkers NY on April 3 1981 Wife of the late James Mother of James Patricia Thomas and Loretta Niece of Mrs Henry Shanley' Grandmother of 5 Callings hours at the RED McGrath 8 son funeral HOME Bronxville between the hours of 2 4 and 7 9 pm and Monday Mass of Christian Burial St Eugene's Church" Yonkers on Tuesday April 7 at 10am ZEL1N Theodroe on April 4 1981 of Hartsdale NY formerly of Yonkers NY Beloved Husband of Elizabeth Zelin Devoted ayk ther of Sandra usco and Ray mond Zelin Also survived by five grandchildren Reposing at the HASTINGS UNERAL HOME 15 Spring Street Has 1 tings on Hudson NY Visiting hours 2 4 and 7 9 pm Sunday and Monday Mass of Christian Burial 10:45 am Tuesday in the Church of St Eugene Tuckahoe Road Yonkers Interment Mt Hope Cemetery IN MEMORIAM CARRIERO Joseph Third Anniversary in Heaven Gone but not forgotten always in our hearts amily EDERICE Nicholas 10th Anniversary in Heaven Though your smile has gone for ever And your hand we cannot touch We have so many memories Of you Dad we loved so much Wife Children Grandson PROTANO John Second Anniversary Those we love we never lose or always they will be Loved remembered treasured Always in our memory Love Wife Children Grandchil dren LODGE NOTICE DALY Walter Sr Members of Wil liam A Dunthy Coun cil No 450 will meet Sunday 7:45 pm at the MCMAHON LYON HARTNETT UNERAL HOME to conduct Services for their late brother Amondo Delvecchio Grand Knight.
