'4B Saturday July 24 1993 RDMTRPCMK Local NewsObituaries Gannett Suburban Newspapers NJ to probe death of Kent Cliffs woman Staff and wire reports TRENTON NJ The death of a 20 year old Kent Cliffs wom an found bruised bloodied and half clothed in a Wildwood NJ alley more than three years ago will be investigated as a homi cide not an accident New Jersey state Attorney General Robert Del Tufo said yesterday The development in the case of Susan death comes after persistent efforts by the father Kent Ne gersmith and a review by nation ally known pathologist Dr Mi chael Baden am encouraged that the state of New Jersey is finally acknowledging that my daughter Susan was beaten raped and Kent Negersmith said in a prepared statement death was not an acci dent We want the death certifi cate changed to reflect that he said body was found in an alley behind a restaurant on Memorial Day weekend in 1990 Negersmith a graduate of Carmel High School and a li censed cQsmetologist and six friends went to Wildwood to cele brate the end of the school year She was studying marketing at the time of her death An assistant state medical ex aminer ruled she had died from drinking too much alcohol and Cape May County authorities closed the case The state Division of Criminal Justice began an independent review in April 1991 that has included interviews polygraph and DNA tests and re view of the body Del Tufo said Baden deter mined that Negersmith had been sexually assaulted and strangled in the alley and that her body had been moved so it would not be easily seen Several factors continue to complicate the case including extremely drunken state at the time of her death and evidence she fell and broke a tooth before her death authori ties said Tests after her death revealed a blood alcohol level of 0285 percent in her brain Kent Negersmith started ask ing questions after the local au thorities labeled her death acci dental He talked to a witness who said he saw the woman at 2:15 am and that her eyes were puffy and red from crying yet saw no cuts and bruises daughter Ne gersmith said was strong about that sort of A news release from Del Tu fa's office said several people have said post office for 38 years 33 of them on a route that encompassed Valley Road Glenn Road and North Chatsworth Av enue He retired in 1981 He had been a member and former chief of the town of Ma maroneck loose again Police sheriffs deputies and state Department of Envi ronmental Conservation ofifi cers were notified Thursday of the disappearance of Susie a 23 year old Himalayan bear with no teeth and no claws Police pursued the animal but were unable to catch her on her 26 acres off Ludingtonville Road The bear was still missing yester day morning Popolizio a former circus 'r performer bought the animal as a cub and used her in his her across the driveway from the site where his house burned on May 18 Popolizio now lives in a motor home there Lost in the fire were pic tures he kept of him kissing Susie and walking her on a leash He said she used to ride a bike and roller skate until he stopped performing with her about 13 years ago A DEC officer in New Paltz said Popolizio has a permit
