Harrison Larchmont and Mamaroneck for weeks Officials unsure of source been able to find the smoking said Sal Celo na director of the Westchester County Water Agency who has met with New York City officials to discuss the issue a diffi cult situation to put your finger Both Westchester and city water officials have offered a variety of theories for the discol oration which was caused by large quantities of iron and man ganese particles in the water The phenomenon was possi bly caused by particles left in the system mains after water was rerouted from New York reservoir system Hock said In that rerouting water that originally went through the Ken sico Reservoir where particles previously had time to settle bypassed it and was trans ported to the Delaware Aque duct which delivers water to southern Westchester Rerouting being checked When the rerouting ended Dec 3 the water quality im proved considerably but since it began again this week discolora tion may occur again Hock said final chapter been written said Hock keeping a cautious eye Thomas Tipa director of the watershed laboratory oper ations in Valhalla said all that is mere speculation Tipa said a more likely source of the problem was high chlorine levels in the water It was felt that large amount of chlorine in the water reacted with old cast iron on the inside of the pipes releasing particles into the drinking water High oxygen may be cause Discoloration could also have been caused by high amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water which reacted with the inner lining of the mains Tipa said that among other things the water was rerouted to the Hillview Reservoir in Yon kers with mixed results did everything within the limitations of the said Tipa who said the problems were being monitored 24 hours a day
