from New York University On Jan 23 1949 he married Betty Miller Dr Grad spent his entire pro fessional career at New York Uni Courant Institute where he was appointed an assistant pro fessor in 1948 and a professor in 1957 He helped found the Magne tofluid Dynamics Division at the institute and was the Warren Haight ex telephone installer Warren Haight a retired telephone installer for AT and a longtime Yorktown resident died Tuesday at Peekskill Community Hospital after a short illness He was 56 Born in New York City June 12 1930 Mr Haight was the son of rank and Rose Witzmann Haight He had been a Yorktown resident for the past 24 years Mr Haight had worked as a telephone installer for AT for 32 years He retired in November 1984 Mr Haight was a member of the Yorktown Republican Club He grandchildren Harold Grad: noted mathematician physicist director from 1956 to 1980 Among his many honors Dr Grad was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1970 The same year he received the Boris Pregel Award from the New York Academy of Sciences for his re search in nuclear physics and nu clear engineering He was a Guggenheim ellow from 1981 to 1982 and received the Eringen Medal from the Society of Engineering Sciences in 1982 In 1981 he was the visiting distinguished professor of the fac ulty of Sciences at Nagoya Univer sity of Japan During his career Dr Grad was a chairman of the fluid dynam ics division and the plasma physics division of the American Physical Society He also served as an advis er to the Oak Ridge National Labo ratory on usion Energy in Oak Ridge Tenn and was on the board of directors of the Society of Engi neering Sciences and the board of governors of the New York Acade my of Sciences He also served on various com mittees of the US Department of Energy the National Academy of Sciences the National Research Council the American Mathemati cal Society and the American Asso ciation for the Advancement of Science Dr Grad was a consultant to the United States government and industry He published more than 90 scientific papers during his ca reer A member of the Committee of Concerned Scientists a New York based group of scientists concerned with human rights issues he also belonged to Beth El Synagogue in New Rochelle In addition to his wife and son Dr Grad is survived by a daughter Hilary Lynn Goldberg of Newton Mass and a brother Arthur of Ardsley Melvin Gilbreath: custodian Melvin Gilbreath who worked as a custodian and handyman for several years at many locations including some in the White Plains school district died Monday
