Democratic Party for light and transient reasons We did so because the Carter administration has drifted so far away from the Democratic liberal tradition that we could scarcely see it much less endorse it Nonetheless the choice of Anderson opened a serious rift between the Liberals and state labor chieftains who have been among their main allies State AL CIO leader Raymond Corbett has attacked Ander voting record on labor issues in Congress and International Garment president Sol Chaikin has accused the party leadership of its for a good showing on the Liberal line this fall Lucey defended voting record telling the Liberals that he could their over the Rockford Ill labor record in his early years in the House But he added Anderson came from a semi rural town in northeast and be held to positions that he took 20 years ago voting record has become more progressive as the years have gone Lucey told the Liberals choice also seemed to betray a breach between the older and younger members of the party which has declined drastically in both registration and voter appeal in the past few years Stuart Scheftel a 25 year member of the Liberals said the decision to embrace Anderson be a disaster for the and promised to resign when and if Anderson was chosen Ben Davidson 79 the last of the founders of the party who is still active in its affairs backed Carter saying good is a large vote on the Liberal line if the vote brings victory for Reagan in the state and Also at the meeting the Liberals re elected the Rev Donald Harrington the Unitarian minister who has been chairman station is also set In August he was invited to address the convention of the American Independent Party which split from the American Party in the 1970s in an unsuccessful move to unify the two groups A standing ovation welcomed him he said Even though he sits to the right he is disappointed in Ronald candidacy say that Reagan (if elected) will set the cause of conservatism back 50 years because his programs will fail The collapse of our economy under him will be blamed on Greaves said Greaves believes that the failure of the economy due to adherence to present policies will be blamed on whoever sits in the Oval office an economist I would rather have it (economic failure) with Carter and hopefully the next election would go the other He does not see large differences between the two candidates as Reagan has softened his policies to broaden his support While Greaves believes the upcoming debates will determine to some extent the elections outcome he also believes only one who
