6A Saturday March 9 1996 TR RDM Obituaries Gannett Suburban Newspaper John McElroy: former Elmsford mayor John McElroy a lifelong Elmsford resident who served as mayor from 1977 to 1981 and from 1983 to 1986 died yester day at Phelos Memorial Hospital Center in North Tarry town He was 70 Mr McEl roy died of complications from cancer He served as a village trustee from 1970 to 1977 Mr McEl roy owned and operated Stationery and Toy Store in Elmsford for 27 years He retired in 1972 He was a licensed real estate dealer for 35 years and part owner of McEl roy lynn uneral Home Inc in Elmsford Mr McElroy worked in the marketing division for West chester County Department of Parks Recreation and Conserva tion in Rye He retired in 1991 He was born Sept 13 1925 to Dennis and Alvina Custer McEl roy in Elmsford He attended Westchester Community College in Greenburgh On Jan 13 1946 he married Virginia Odell in Maryland They celebrated their 50th anniversa ry in January During World War II he served in the Marines Mr McElroy was a member and past president of the Elms ford Lions Club and was past president and chairman of West chester County Village Officials Association He was a member of the American Legion in Elms ford Mr McElroy was Elmsford village historian from 1984 to 1990 He was chairman of the Elms ford Village Republican Commit tee from 1981 to 1985 and was a member of Sen John staff from 1985 to 1988 He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Elmsford In addition to his wife he is survived by a son Dennis of Elmsford three daughters Vir ginia Sanfratello and Carrie Jackson both of Elmsford and Alvina Stelluti of LaGrange NY and seven grandchildren A son John Jr died in 1972 Nine brothers and sisters also died earlier McElroy lynn uneral Home Inc is handling the arrange ments John McElroy L' Sumner Kilmarx: Scarsdale resident i Sumner Kilmarx former president of Theodore Hofstatter Co an interior design firm in New York City died March 2 at his home in Scarsdale He was 96 Mr Kilmarx was born Jan 29 1900 in New York City to Louis and Margaret awcett Kilmarx He attended New York Mili tary Academy and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1922 The following year he graduated from Amos Tuck School of Busi ness Administration at Dart mouth Mr Kilmarx subsequently joined Theodore Hofstatter Co his interior design decorating firm He became pres ident of the company and ran it with his wife Elizabeth After she died in 1973 he ran it alone until 1989 when he retired While he was in charge of the company he led its transition from a traditional residential in terior decorating firm to provid ing interior design and decorat ing services to banks corporations and law firms In 1924 he married Elizabeth Harris in Athens Ga On May 5 1975 he married Helen Wood at her home in Scarsdale Mr Kilmarx also made a name for himself in the sports As manager of 1921 football team he arranged for its first Southern schedule and trip when it defeated the University of Georgia the No 1 school in the nation at the time Mr Kilmarx was affiliated for a long time with the ox Meadow Tennis Club of Scarsdale where the game of paddle tennis was conceived in 1928 by essenden Blanchard and James Cogswell as an outdoor winter variation of tennis He was one of the original group of eight players that furth er developed and popularized the game He and his partner Clifford Couch were the first national doubles champions in 1935 winning against Wimbledon Lawn Tennis players Cliff Sutter and Sidney Wood They were national champions again in 1939 In 1951 he was chairman of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council that recruited and hired Bob Blackman one of the most successful football coaches Mr Kilmarx received the Dartmouth Alumni Award in 1966 Mr Kilmarx was a former member of the American Yacht Club of Rye the University Club of New York and the Whippoor will and St golf clubs in Westchester County Survivors include his second wife Helen Wood Kilmarx of Scarsdale a son Robert Kilmarx of Barrington RI three grand children and four great grand sons The Bennett uneral Home in Scarsdale is handling yesterday at her home She vyas 75 Mrs arrell was born May 18 1920 in Schenectady NY to William and Catherine Ruste meyer Copeland She graduated from Mount Vernon High School and attended Berkley Business School in White Plains In 1982 she received a bache degree in English from lyestern Connecticut State Uni versity in Danbury Conn Mrs arrell retired from NY SEG in 1990 after 31 years She was a member of the Putnam Hospital Center Auxiliary She worked at the Eagle Eye Thrift Shop She was an editor of the NY company newsletter Tie lines past president of the Put nam Home Care Council and a member of the St Lawrence Globe Trotters travel group in Brewster Mrs arrell is survived by five daughters Patricia Ledley of Brewster Jamie arrell of Pleas ant Valley Ginger Lefurgy of Putnam Valley Medal the European Afri can Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal Eugene Klatte who worked as a loader and checker for Nabisco Co in Pleasantville died Thursday at his home in the Bronx He was 91 Mr Klatte worked for Nabisco for 24 years He retired in 1969 He was born Sept 15 1904 in New York City to Otto and Teresa Motz Klatte He was educated in rance On May 13 1929 he married Eugenie Matheis in New York City She died in 1987 He had lived in the Bronx for 60 Dominick Di Giovanni Sr: retired supermarket produce manager Grayce Gasparre at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Yonkers where he was a parish ioner Mr Di Giovanni was a mem ber of the rank A Rea Ameri can Legion Post in Yonkers He later joined Senior Citizens Group No 5 in Yonkers He is remembered as a devot ed family man who was blessed with a wonderful sense of hu mor his family said His hobbies were golf and listening to oper as his family said Mr Di Giovanni is survived by two sons Ralph of Manhattan She was born July 11 1911 to Joseph and Mary Curran in Bronxville Mrs Clark lived in Scarsdale for more than 50 years She and her husband moved to ort My ers three years ago She was a former
