Installed the shock tower bar from a '99 sport. Sniffed around the radiator. New one needed before spring. Does anybody sell a kit for replacing all the hoses, heater hoses too?

You can get a set from Hose Techniques on eBay. They offer blue, black and red for around $70. Not too sure if they have the rad hoses or not. I bought the black set from them, just waiting for them to show so I can replace the hideous yellow my car came with (those will be for sale if anyone is interested).

Opened the boxes that came while I was gone, installed the new cig lighter and replaced the factory chrome gas door with a properly painted one.

Bought one of the aluminum racing jacks from Harbor Freight. Then I jacked up my '99, rotated the tires and installed new front brake pads. The latter must be one of the easiest things to do on this car. Almost as easy as my old TR-6. The jack is something I should have bought months ago since my regular floor jack is too tall to fit underneath.

Installed the cargo net. This thing is pretty small and just hangs from two hooks mounted at the front of the trunk. Still it will keep small items from knocking around. Also checked around underneath and found out I have braided stainless brake lines (they aren't coated though so will have to be sure they aren't near anything). On Saturday I measured my wheel clearances to find the front is under 12" (wheel hub to fender lip) and the rear is about 12.5". I'll be changing that this week along with all fluids.

I installed a new leather shift boot. Then I crawled underneath and drilled out broken off bolts that hold on the undertray. Not a lot of fun, but I didn't want to loose it while driving down the highway.

SneakyPete,

I bought the 3,000 lb. model. It's item 67408. Usually sells for $79 and I've seen bunches of coupons in the newspaper and magazines to get it for $59, but couldn't find one in date, so I googled for coupons online and found a 20 percent off one, which they honored.

What I did, Part Deux: Was getting ready to leave for the store and found my passenger window wouldn't go down. Took off the door panel and eventually found the plastic part that held the cable to the door had popped out. I managed to get the cable off the pulley while messing with it, but finally got it back on and re-inserted the part in the door and secured it further with a wire tie. Greased the window track with Lithium grease and all is even better than before. Also discovered my tweeter grills don't have tweeters behind them. Then off to the Piggly Wiggly for zucchini and some Guinness Stout.

purchased a 2001+ tan center console and painted it black. I did the degrease spray and plastic prep....then sprayed a satin black plastic spray. Far too shiney and looked like arse. Went to Autozone and found this mat black vinyl spray that was a darn near perfect match. Looks real good now. I also put on 01+ tail lights and wired up the 01+ fogs.

The problem is that the bar it self is sliding back and forth, not the links. The stock bar has some rubber collars on there..

Got back from a long vacation and visited the kids and grandkids.

Number 1 (and only son) had a 'gift' for me. He and friends drive VWs - they are great cars. Some friends with aftermarket intakes have used the K&N Cleaning/Oiling kit on their VWs and found that the vapours from the K&N oil have messed/dirtied the MAF!

Thus there seems to be a few unused/partly used K&N kits out there. One of those was offered to my son who said he wouldn't use it but I might on our 2003 LS which came to us with an aftermarket intake and a K&N cone filter. So yesterday I sprayed the K&N cleaner on the filter and washed it out as per the instructions. I have just oiled the 'clean'!? filter and will install it after the oil permeates the pleats.

Has anyone had MAF problems after cleaning and oiling a K&N with the K&N products?

Triple88A

4th October 2010, 16:04

I have seen few people report of MAF issues due to the oil screwing up the wire. Usually the fix was a new MAF as the wire cannot be cleaned. No personal experience though.

it's emerald mica. 18J or 8J (depending on which dealer you talk to) is the paint code

the wheels are 15x7 tr motorsports c1m's. They're cheap as anything off tire rack but a total pain in the balls to clean.

Today was a Miata day. Changed fluids (oil, trans and diff). Flushed/bled the brakes, first time using my new pressure bleeder. It didn't quite work as advertised so I'll have to see if my procedure was off. Finally, I raised her up 13mm. While under the car I discovered what has been scraping wasn't the fender liner, but the frame rails. I had to run out so didn't get definitive measurements hub to fender, but it looks like I actually gained close to an inch (25mm for those so inclined). Not sure why the difference between the shock amount and that, I could see it if the car had a setup similar to a motorcycle (where you get a greater increase at the wheel from shock adjustment) but I don't see that being the case here.

I found whoever changed the oil last didn't put the filter on well, it was barely on.

What'd you recommend?

R2Limited

6th October 2010, 10:49

Those are 15x6 +40 - so you can go with at LEAST 25mm of spacer. I'd go with 40mm on 6" wide wheels, myself. So your effective offset would be +0. That'll give you an outer "flushness" somewhat comparable to a 9" wide 6UL.

Of course, you'll need extended wheel studs unless your spacers have built in studs. Spacers in the 40mm ballpark usually have their own studs pressed in already.

I'd thought about my 16x7 +42's, but not to that degree. I was thinking more like 5-10mm.

R2Limited

6th October 2010, 11:04

On 7" +42 I'd space at least 20mm out to get +22. Unless you don't want to roll fenders. At that point you'll have to take your own measurements b/c my knowledge only encompasses what it takes to fit nicely with rolled fenders :)

IMO - the ideal fitment is 8" wide +20 offset or an equivalent. I came to this conclusion just based on playing with my own car. It just so happens that this is almost exactly the same as 9" wide +36...which is how 949 Racing decided to size the 6UL.

chiefmg

6th October 2010, 11:33

Okay, blame a senior moment (I am!), but I measured things on the suspension today closely and found I pretty much raised things the same amount as what I measured on the shocks. So I'm now at 12.5" front and 13" rear. I'm happy with that for now.

Ya I was tempted a little but im not really a fan of being 2" off the floor. Im prob going to get some aftermarket wheels because stock wheels being 6" wide is to skinny for me. Im going to try and get some 15x8 or 16x8 wheels. Just not sure what I want yet.

I've seen his posts; you gotta applaude his willingness to experiment, and I enjoy his Brit take on things. Smashing!!

The trunk light is an idea from the Garage section here, I just used parts that were readily available. The LED's are very bright, and illuminate the trunk space perfectly. The glow is kind of eerie, nothing like an incandescent bulb. Now I don't have to turn on the parking lights and use the tag lights so I can see. I used self adhesive velcro because the light went in a place I couldn't drill for screws. Maybe bestvesta would have just screwed it through the trunk lid.

Installed my Hella Supertones. They don't seem as loud as the Fiamms I usually use, I'm going to check the ground on one (I bought a new mounting bracket and it may not be grounding well) to see if that helps, otherwise I'll be switching them out. Also installed the new passenger side foglight only to find the driver's side isn't working. Will check the bulb on that one when I can. While it was all apart I figured out the problem with the driver's side headlight not lining up correctly with the bumper, it is missing a plastic attachment point that goes between the body and the lower tab on the light. So another thing to order in.

Drive down an alley and turn your head towards the wall. That should make it obvious.

This one seemed to degrade into making noise all at once, but after removing it from the axle it was clear that it had leaked all the lubricant out. Still, without the weight of the car on it, it felt fine. The real test was that the new one stopped the noise.

Be happy if it's the rear bearing. They are much MUCH less expensive than the front hubs. You can change both rear bearings for less than half the price of one front hub assembly.

I have seen pics of a polished valve cover which looked pretty good. I'm not sure what they used to clean my valve cover (my mechanic did the painting for me while the engine was apart). I would use Acetone because it would degrade just about everything but the aluminum. As far as the paint is concerned, honestly, I have no idea what kind it was… They just offered to paint it and I said cherry red. I'm assuming it was an "engine enamel" or "brake paint." It should be some kind of high temp paint for extreme temperatures, otherwise it would flake off or discolor. And about posting pics… I used my iPhone and an app called TapaTalk (I think that's how you spell it). I can view these forums natively with that app and can attach images very easily. To post an image with a mac/pc you can either attach the image by clicking on the paper clip above the text entry box or you can insert an image from a photo service like photobucket or flickr or even your own website if you have one.

Can the valve covers be polished, or is painting the only option.

Powder coating is a much better option, if you have the extra space. i have a system i bought from Eastwood about 7 years ago that is still working great. i bought an electric household oven for 20 bucks and i do all the small parts i can myself. It doesn't have to go to a professional to get great results.

Still haven't done the NB's valve cover, but once I get some spare time it's next. But a couple things I have done recently:

My $9 shift knob

Washed autocross dirt off and cleaned cone spooge off one of the wheels. Also had my money refunded for a CD changer radio I bought off eBay that was defective, but the seller told me to junk it. With nothing to lose I tore into it tonight. Hoping that it works so I can pass it along as another option for us early NB owners without the need to fabricate wiring connections. Because I know the question will arise, the radio is from a 2000 626 with Bose, 6 CD changer. The connections are EXACTLY the same as my 2000 SE. The radio worked when I got it but the CD changer didn't. I found two discs left inside and the laser head was out of position, also the faceplate attachment point in way of the eject button had broken so the eject wasn't operable. I took care of those points, waiting on epoxy and silicone to dry overnight and will try installing/testing it tomorrow.

Half a day to gather the parts, half a day to perform the procedure, semi-asphyxiation due to gas fumes (despite being outside), finally threw caution to the wind getting that bugger out, but got 'er done! I'll definitely consider letting the dealer do this procedure the next time around.

I had previously identified the spot that led to my exhaust rattle and today I went to a shop to have it fixed. Luckily, it was as simple as tightening up a mounting bracket. I was afraid it needed replacing as it looked fairly rusty.

The shop also does alignments and offered me a discount but unfortunately I need to replace the left front bearing/hub assembly first (they checked this for me as I haven't been able to establish whether it was the left front or rear bearing that was gone).

They did it all for free - probably because they felt a bit bad after having me wait for 40 minutes yesterday after which they had to ask me to return today :)

Re: Painting Valve Cover

Get a can of VHT Wrinkle paint. (Red or black). I did red and it looks awesome. Like a Ferrari valve cover or intake manifold. You can get the same finish in powder coat for 10x the cost, but you can't tell the difference. It's really durable, too. Just make sure to prep the valve cover by cleaning it very well before painting. I used simple green followed by some brake cleaner and then a final wipe-down with paint thinner. Overkill?

Click here for a big pic. (http://roadstergarage.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/engine_bay.jpg)

What did I do to my roadster today? Installed a Nardi Deep corn 350 classic steering wheel with NRG shortie hub and quick release. Also installed a new shift boot. Both the wheel and the boot are black with red stitching to match the seats in the '05 MSM interior that I swapped into my '99. Looks like a new car and the "new leather" smell of the steering wheel makes the car feel like brand new. Love it. Pics to come...

Removed the Hellas from the Miata and installed the Fiamms, much better. I also tried replacing the driver's side foglight bulb but it still isn't working. Attached the two stiffeners for the foglight brackets to the body where they belonged (was missing a couple of nuts), and put the missing retainer on the driver's side headlight. Unfortunately I dropped one of the headlight bolts and couldn't find it, so I'm calling it a night and will give it another shot tomorrow.

Ended up pulling off the crossover tube from the supercharger to the intake manifold, and removing the cold airbox to have a better look around on the exhaust side of the engine. Good thing I did as the airbox had a bunch of sand in it (from long ago by the looks of it). Still couldn't find the damn bolt, finally went to pull the headlight again and I heard a noise, looked and there it was. Guess it just wanted me to work for it! So I cleaned everything up including the air filter and put it all back together. Also removed the yellow overhose on the throttle cable. I'm not happy with how the throttle cable is run but I don't know if it needs to be that way for the supercharger. Going to do some research to see if I can reroute it. I also flipped the stopper on the passenger seat rail to give that extra inch or so of legroom.

Busy day on the Miata, and once again, I am good! Received the 2000 Tribute radio w/CD changer today so pulled it apart. The ad said there was something loose inside which was readily apparent. When I pulled it apart I found out it was 36 cents in change! Guess someone's kid thought that was a good place to put it. Also it was pretty dusty-dirty, maybe from down south? So I cleaned things up and swapped out the changers. Swapped over the cassette deck door (so mine would still say Bose) on the front panels and assembled it all up. Put that sucker in, and it works!

I bought 1 windshield wiper (yes 1). I have windshield wiper ocd and i like new wipers so every six months I move the drivers wiper to the passenger side and buy myseld a new driver one (7.99 from costco for the single blade type).

Not sure if its my imagination, but I feel that my car takes off much smoother with the a/c on since my new FM flywheel. Anyone else experience this?

Picked up the set of goodridge stainless brake lines today.

I also order some new seals from rosenthal

well, got the exhaust installed, came out great, honestly i'm disappointed. The stinken borla is so loud i feel uncomfortable driving it.

I'm using a 3" dynamax resonator which appears to be doing nothing.

@ cardude720: what FM flywheel weight did you go with? i have the 10 pound one and it seems to drop idle more with the a/c on then pics back up to normal (mostly because it drops revs so dam fast). so far i love the clutch, about 200 more miles before its done being broken in.

ordered a HDHCHT with cover and padding yesterday should be here in the next few days. now to look into a seat...i have upper body length :( looking at the axis racing seat as it drops me the most with adjust ability still (use of stock seat rails) as i will be taking it to the track

I was only man enough to go for the 13 pounder due to fear of chatter. I figured you lose all cool points when your car sounds like crap.

She got 3.8 litres of Agip 5W-30 and a new front left wheel bearing/hub. Then an alignment, which was badly needed as it turned out:

(Before)
Front:
left toe: 0°05' OUT
right toe: 0°06' IN
left camber: -0°39'
right camber: -0°52'
left caster: +5°36'
right caster: +4°26'
Rear:
left toe: 0°13' IN
right toe: 0°01' IN
left camber: -1°04'
right camber: -0°39'

No freakin' wonder I found it much easier to get the rear end to step out when turning left than when turning right...

(After)
Front:
left toe: 0°00'
right toe: 0°00'
left camber: -1°15'
right camber: -1°14'
left caster: +5°49'
right caster: +5°37'
Rear:
left toe: 0°06' IN
right toe: 0°06' IN
left camber: -1°41'
right camber: -1°42'

From a relatively short trip today, I can tell that the improvements are quite noticeable. I ended up with slightly more camber than what I aimed for and I'm not entirely satisfied with the differences in L/R caster but I think that's not too big a deal.

See post 2211 in this thread: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=177455&page=89. Whatever model I have it does work with the glass rear window.

Received and installed my Cobalt front tower bar. Wasn't too bad of an install, test driving it afterwards I found that I had brakes, then I didn't. After inspecting under the hood I found the crosspipe for the brake booster vacuum signal had moved downward enough to crimp the hose that connected it to the intake mani. Well, it wasn't today but on Friday we, wife, me and our 2003 LS, attended a Marshal Appreciation Day at the Calabogie Track http://www.calabogiemotorsports.com/ where we occasionally marshal (man a corner flag station) for Lapping days. This 'appreciation' include laps around the track (in a lead follow situation) in either one of the track's race prepped Mustang GTs or in you own car. We arrived late, Mustangs were spoken for so I went around in the Miata. Lots of fun, lost the 'tow' on the uphill sections but could out brake into the corners to catch up so I was never left behind. Ended up with (I believe as who was really counting) 7 laps. My wife went in the lead car - a Porsche Caymen S and had a blast! This was followed by a "blind folded driver with passenger to give directions, golf cart race" in the paddock. Funniest auto event you will ever see! This was followed by a dinner.

Then yesterday we joined our daughter's Genesis Coupe car club group for their last 'Grand Tour' of the season over the beautiful Eastern Ontario back roads. What a way to end the Miata season as we will garage the Miata next week for the winter.

I purchased my first Miata a few weeks ago, and knowing how valuable and helpful the Kawasaki Vulcan forum has been for me ( I also have a bike) I quickly searched for Miata forums and I'm very grateful that I found MX-5 Miata.net.

I've been doing a lot of searching, reading and research on here and it has been very rewarding. I don't even have an owners manual yet (on order) yet I was able to do the following thanks to the forum members here:

- Install kill switch (off clutch switch)
- Change oil & filter no problems
- Replace ac/heater blower motor easily (noisy and it wasn't debris)
- Repaired hinge on center console
- Completed the vac hose mod/change location to rid the nuisance Po4o2 EGR CEL code
- Removed cassette player and installed aux in switch & port
- Relocated the airbag switch and cig lighter to glove box to make room for JSpec cubby and Hazard button
- After much research and reading here I decided to make all mods in such a way that they are easily reversed if needed

I'm looking forward to eventually doing more mods and adding gauges, etc.. The info and help from other members here will certainly give me the continued confidence to undertake these projects myself...saving mucho dinero and giving me the added pleasure and satisfaction that I can, with the help from others here, have some fun modifying, driving and enjoying these fun cars. I'm loving my Miata!! Thanks to all who have contributed and made this such a great forum! Looking forward to more info, help and entertainment ahead.

Took a short test drive for the windblocker. Works well as is, I had it at 60 with little to now buffeting. May still fill in the gap with some plexi, and will probably put some small strips of Velcro at the top to keep it from falling forward.
