My Favorite Easy Chocolate Mousse Recipe

Chocolate mousse (not to be confused with a moose!) is one of the most dreamy desserts that one needs to know how to make—the perfect chocolate fix for any true chocolate lover. It feels so fancy and special -- but anyone who tastes it would never guess that it was so easy to make.

Good news! This 3-ingredient chocolate mousse recipe is eggless and gluten-free, making it a perfect dessert to make for anyone needing to avoid eggs or gluten.

What is Mousse?

The word mousse is French for foam, which is a perfect way to describe this dessert. There are many different types of mousse, some savory and some sweet. Perhaps you’ve had a savory version before, such as salmon mousse, or a sweet flavored mousse other than chocolate, like a lemon mousse. Some other favorite sweet mousses are coffee, caramel, strawberry, and vanilla.

Sweet mousse is usually made with whipped cream or egg whites and sugar, plus flavorings-- sometimes stabilized with gelatin or agar-agar. This eggless chocolate mousse does not contain a stabilizer because it is simply not needed.

Mousses can be molded into various shapes for serving, such as a small pyramid. They may also be used as a filling element for a cake or pie. There are so many different ways to make and serve mousse!

Chocolate Mousse, Brazilian Style

While other mousse recipes might be more on the light and airy side, Brazilian-style mousse is thick and creamy in texture. We love to top it with whipped cream and fresh berries.

Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make this easy chocolate mousse:

  • Chocolate – of course, the rich chocolate flavor comes from… chocolate!
  • Sweetened condensed milk – this sweet canned milk provides the extra sweeter needed for the chocolate mousse and also adds to the thick and creamy texture.
  • Whipped cream – whipped heavy cream is what really makes this a mousse. It is the aerating ingredient in the recipe. As you whip the cream, you’ll be adding a lot of air for that perfect foamy texture.

To adapt this recipe into a keto chocolate mousse, simply omit the sweetened condensed milk and use sugar-free chocolate. Keep in mind that it will yield less mousse.

How to Make This Easy Chocolate Mousse Recipe

Easy chocolate mousse recipe (3)

  1. Begin by beating 1 cup of cold heavy whipping cream with an electric mixer until medium peaks form, which takes 1-2 minutes. Set this cream aside.
  2. Tip: For best results, chill the bowl that you’ll be whipping the cream in so that the cream stays as cold as possible. This takes just about 15 minutes in the refrigerator. A chilled bowl helps the cream whip into medium peaks faster.
  3. Next, place the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each 30-second cooking period, until fully melted. This should take about 1 ½ to 2 minutes.
  4. In a small bowl, heat ½ cup of heavy cream in the microwave until warm, about 45-60 seconds. Pour the warmed cream into the melted chocolate along with the sweetened condensed milk; beat with an electric mixer or whisk by hand until the mixture is creamy and smooth.
  5. Finally, fold in the whipped cream that you prepared at the very beginning. SEE PIC. 1 Do not overmix; fold just until the mixture is hom*ogeneous. SEE PIC. 2

How to Serve the Mousse

Pour the prepared chocolate mousse into ramekins, then cover them and chill for at least 2 hours until the mousse is cold and set. I serve the mousse right in the little ramekins. It makes for a really lovely presentation!

Another option would be to use small, clear glasses. This is a nice serving touch because you can see the mousse through the glass.

What to Serve with Chocolate Mousse

Although chocolate mousse is delish all on its own, it is really nice with a few toppings, both for visual appeal and added flavor and texture. Here are some great topping ideas:

  • Whipped Cream – a dollop of freshly whipped, lightly sweetened cream is a really nice addition to a serving of chocolate mousse. The richness of the chocolate goes well with the smooth creaminess of the whipped cream.
  • Chocolate shavings or curls – grate a small dark or white chocolate bar and sprinkle the shavings over top of the whipped cream onto the mousse, or use a vegetable peeler to make chocolate curls to place on top for a beautiful extra touch.
  • Fresh berries – top your chocolate mousse with an assortment of fresh berries. Our favorites are sliced strawberries or raspberries. The tartness of the fruit balances the richness of the chocolate so well.
  • Caramel – for extra sweetness, drizzle a little caramel sauce or dulce de leche over top of the chocolate mousse.
  • Cocoa powder – a light dusting of unsweetened cocoa powder over the top of the whipped cream on the mousse is really pretty.
  • Mint – add a fresh mint leaf to the top of your chocolate mousse for a pop of lovely green color.

Can You Make Mousse Ahead?

Yes, this is a perfect make-ahead dessert because the mousse refrigerates very well. Just be sure to cover the ramekins of mousse well with plastic wrap to keep them from drying out too much. You’ll also want to hold off on any toppings until just before you’re about to serve the mousse.

The easy chocolate mousse will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days, but is best eaten within 3 days.

How to Store Leftover Mousse

Store any leftover mousse in the fridge for up to 5 days, either covered with plastic wrap or in an airtight container. If you freeze for up to 30 days, it will become more like ice cream than a mousse.
