So, I’m going to be completely honest. I’ve never really liked beer. To the point that, for a long time, I was very seriously convinced that NO ONE liked beer, and anyone who said otherwise was lying because they thought it was something they were supposed to like. Turns out, there are actually quite a few people who genuinely enjoy the taste. Hm. Who knew??

Naturally, my distaste for beer made my house a less than ideal place for people to get together to watch sports. I would never think to stock up on beer, and it’d lead to some disgruntled guests. I did, however, eventually find a compromise with beer-lovers when I discovered that food made with beer actually tastes pretty awesome. Now, on game days, that’s usually what I serve for snacks, appetizers, and dinner. That way, I’ll have some beer leftover for those who want it, and everyone gets yummy food! So, if you’ll be entertaining people next game day, these Recipes with Beer are sure to satisfy everyone, whether you’ll be cracking open a cold can of beer or cracking open a cold can of soda like me.

What does beer do in recipes? ›

Why cook with beer? Beer adds a rich, earthy flavor to soups and stews that makes them taste like they've been simmering for hours. Beers with a sweet or nutty taste can add depth to desserts. And don't worry about getting drunk – virtually all of the alcohol evaporates during the cooking process.

What is in beer besides alcohol? ›

The basic ingredients of beer are water; a starch source, such as malted barley or malted maize (such as used in the preparation of Tiswin and Tesgüino), able to be saccharified (converted to sugars) and then fermented (converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide); a brewer's yeast to produce the fermentation; and a ...

What is the ratio of hops to beer? ›

What does beer do to chicken? ›

Enhancing Chicken with Beer

Water and fat don't mix, but alcohol and fat do. The alcohol is able to penetrate deep into the meat, carrying the flavors of the brine solution with it. Beer can also break down fat, something that water cannot. You can also baste the chicken with beer.

What does beer do to meat when cooked? ›

A “normal” measurement for dry hopping is between 1–2 oz. (28–56 g) of hops for a five-gallon (19-L) batch. But the real answer to the question of how much is simply, “as much as you want.” If you want just a hint of hop aroma you might go as low as a 1/2 oz. (14 g).

Most of the beer we all drink is made from the same four ingredients. Barley, water, hops and yeast, yes that's all it takes to create the world's most refreshing drink. The basic idea is to extract the sugars from grains (usually barley) so that the yeast can turn it into alcohol and CO2, creating beer.

What is the primary grain used in beer? ›

Most breweries will use barley as their main grain. Why? Because it has an excellent starch to protein ratio and provides the enzymes needed for the third stage of brewing, called mashing. You can't just chuck barley in the tanks though.
